Dear Friends and Neighbors,

On Wednesday, August 20th, the Whitley County Planning Commission voted to send the proposed spot zoning in Jefferson Township—zoning that would allow for a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO)—to the County Commissioners for a final vote. They voted to send one parcel without a recommendation, and one with an unfavorable recommendation and vote of 5-2 against. This is a huge step forward and it means our voices were heard. But the fight isn’t over. The County Commissioners will make the final decision, and this spot zoning could still be approved unless we continue to speak up.

This spot zoning goes against Whitley County’s Comprehensive Plan. A CAFO here could threaten our families, our water supply, our air quality, and the value of our homes and farmland. This is not the type of growth or development the leaders of Whitley County wanted in this area, as clearly stated in the Comprehensive Plan.

We want to thank the nearly 400 people who packed the meeting room, hallways, and overflow areas last night. Families, veterans, farmers, business owners, and neighbors facing real health concerns made many great points. Your presence sent a powerful message that Whitley County does not want spot zoning that would allow for a CAFO.

It’s important to remember the County, including those submitting the proposal, originally agreed this land should remain AG only, not AGP. That is not what the Comprehensive Plan envisioned for this area.

Now we must take the next step.

Please contact the County Commissioners and plan to attend their upcoming meeting. This is where the final vote will happen.

What you can do right now:

Call or email the three Whitley County Commissioners and tell them to vote NO on the spot zoning that would allow for a CAFO.

This is the last step where a decision is made. We need another strong turnout to stop this spot zoning, and the CAFO it would allow, once and for all.

Thank you for standing together to protect our county, our families, and our future.
